Francisco Ramirez

Short Biography & Significant Contribution

Francisco Ramirez is a Professor of Education at Stanford University. He has taught courses on World, Societal, and Educational Change: Comparative Perspectives, Education and Society, Education and the Status of Women: Comparative Perspective, Workshop on Comparative Educational and Political Systems, Workshop: Comparative Studies of Educational Systems.

Ramirez conducts cross-national studies on the role of education in the formation of world society and the influence of world society on educational developments. The topics for these studies include: patterns of women's access to higher education, the role of education and science in economic development, and the interrelationships among education, citizenship, and human rights. His current research is on globalization, the impact of the human rights regime, and the rise of human rights education. Ramirez also analyzes civics, history, and social studies textbooks and studies the transformation of the status of women in society and higher education. Other research topics of Ramirez include universities as institutions and organizations, as well as, education, science and development. Ramírez's research interests are generally focused upon Gender Studies, Globalization, Human Rights, International Comparative Education, Sociology of Culture and Sociology of Education.

He has been invited to participate in different lectures around the world including Asia, Latin America, Europe, Africa, and North America. He has lectured about different topics related to education, development, Human Rights, Globalization, Gender Equity, Higher Education, and Institutionalization.

In 1996, Ramirez received the Outstanding International Study of the Year Award from the American Education Research Association (International Studies SIG) for his book World Polity and Gender Parity: Women's Share of Higher Education, 1965-1985 (With K. Bradley).

In 2003, Ramirez received the Barrington Moore Honorable Mention Award from the American Sociological Association on Comparative and Historical Sociology for his book Science and Modern World Polity: Institutionalization and Globalization (with G. Drori, J. Meyer, and E. Schofer).

In 2007-2008, Ramirez received the Faculty Advisor award from the School of Education at Stanford University.
