Luis M. Naya (1961 - )

Short Biography & Significant Contribution

Luis M. Naya is Professor of Comparative Education of the Universidad del País Vasco/Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea, Spain. Immediately after completing his Masters in Philosophy and Educational Sciences in 1986, he joined the university's Department of Theory and History of Education where he has since been engaged in teaching and research for over 20 years. From 1998 to 2004, he had served as Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and Educational Sciences.

Naya's main research areas include bilingual education, study-work relations, and information and communication technology in the curriculum and in recent years, the rights of the child and particularly, the right to education. He is author/editor of nine books and has contributed to over 45 books and scientific articles. In 2003, he was guest editor for the Monograph Section of the Revista Española de Educación Comparada (No.9) dedicated to 'Children and their Rights'.

Naya has made significant contributions to scholarly networking in the field of comparative and international education through his initiatives in employing information technology as an effective tool for communication. In 1999, together with Ferran Ferrer, he launched the Edu-Comp list server hosted by the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas in Spain. Edu-Comp is a mailing list for comparative education operated mainly in Spanish, but also in English and French. In 2007, it had over 130 members from the comparative and international education community, including academics and international agency personnel based in Europe, North and Latin America as well as some parts of Asia. In May 2001, Naya developed the web page of the Sociedad Española de Educación Comparada (SEEC). Initially operating in Spanish, Naya expanded the website's global outreach with the launch of its English version in 2005. As the SEEC webmaster, he keeps the site constantly updated and linked to the worldwide community of comparative education.

Luis M. Naya has also contributed service and leadership in scholarly bodies of comparative education in Spain. In 2006, he convened the X National Congress of Comparative Education of the SEEC on the theme "The Right to Education in a Globalized World". From 2002 to 2006, he had been Secretary of the Sociedad Española de Educación Comparada. He has served in various organizing and scientific committees for national and international congresses as well as on the Editorial Board of the Revista Española de Educación Comparada, and on the Reviewers Committee of Politiques d'Éducation et de Formation (2001-03).
