Publish Date:2020-12-31

On the morning of December 29, 2020, Mr. Tang Qian, the former Assistant Director-General of Education of UNESCO, who was also the highest-ranking Chinese official over the past 69 years since the founding of UNESCO, was invited to the Jingshi Academy at Beijing Normal University to deliver a lecture entitled 25 Years of My Experiences at International Organizations --- International Organizations and Global Education". The lecture was chaired by IICE Professor TENG Jun.

From the perspective of a witness, Mr. TANG Qian shared with faculty and students his 25-year experiences of working at UNESCO, and described the relationship between international organizations and global education development at both macro and micro levels. Mr. TANG first described the blueprint of contemporary international organizations that promote the development of international education from a macro perspective, and vividly explained the relationship between competition, cooperation and gaming in these aspects. On this basis, Mr. TANG, taking account of UNESCO’s five roles, pointed out his role as an active promoter in innovating and disseminating educational concepts, promoting the development of educational policies in various countries, and promoting educational cooperation and mutual assistance among countries. Based on his own work experience at UNESCO, he pointed out that China’s capability and strength still need to improve if benchmarked against UNESCO’s global governance goals, which is because China has not yet formulated an overall strategy for participating in global educational governance. Finally, Mr. Tang expressed his expectations that Chinese officials who will enter international organizations in the future can promote China’s in-depth participation in international organization activities, promote a win-win situation between China and international organizations, share China’s experience on international platforms.

IICE Professor WANG Yingjie, Professor LIU Baocun, Professor GAO Yimin, Professor MA Jiansheng, Professor JIANG Yingmin and many students took the initiative to ask Mr. TANG various questions regarding the training of talents at international organizations, the practice of education for international understanding, etc.
