CONFERENCE THEME & SUB-THEMES

The newest decade of the 21st century has been characterized by very rapid and at times drastic changes in socio-economic, political, scientific and technological, as well as philosophical, ethical and moral domains worldwide. Although the changes and their impacts are more pronounced in western and developed countries, the wind of change has been felt even in the developing regions of the Asia-Pacific. Many, if not all, countries have enthusiastically responded to these changes by undertaking highly crucial reforms at the national level. This has resulted in a series of reform schemes that have touched on politics, economics, finance, bureaucratic systems, and education.
Changes that have occurred have important implications for reforms in the organization and content of education and schooling. Education, or more to the point quality education, is, in turn, seen by countries as a powerful potential change agent that should be proactive rather than just reactive for the betterment of the social, economic, and political environment. In addition, there has been a shift in paradigm from a concentration on economic development to that of sustainable development. The latter is development that not only generates economic growth but distributes its benefits equitably; that regenerates the environment rather than destroys it; that empowers people rather than marginalizes them. It is the type of development that gives priority to the poor, enlarging their choices and
opportunities and providing for their participation in decisions that affect their lives.
This paradigm shift has major implications for the way in which countries view the role of education and schooling in the development process. And the ultimate aim of
those education reforms is the sustainability of the nations, which will enable them to develop as a nation of wealth, stability, and dignity and with the ability to
compete with other countries in the world community.
Considering the need to face a perpetually changing world of education and training, the conference will explore avenues for adapting to the diverse changes for
the ultimate aim of quality education and sustainability under the following thematic streams:
Contemporary Issues and Trends in Comparative Education
Internationalization
Asianness’ in the 21st Century

CALL FOR PRESENTATION PROPOSALS

Proposals for conference presentations are invited from scholars and practitioners working in, supporting or researching comparative education as well as all other related areas. Your conference presentation can take one of several forms, which are described below. When you submit your proposal, please make sure you include your name, address, institution, phone and fax numbers, e-mail address, the names and institutional affiliations of all presenters/authors, and the title of your proposed paper or session.
The full papers having met the requirements of the journal Asian Education Journal, after careful reviewing, will be published in the periodical in the order of
their submission.

Refereed and non-refereed academic papers (Parallel Session)

Papers submitted individually (not as part of a panel or symposium) will be grouped thematically by the conference programming committee. Paper sessions provide authors with an opportunity to formally present their papers, followed by critique and discussion. Paper sessions will be allotted a total of approximately 90 minutes. Each paper session has three presenters. Therefore each presenter has about 20 minutes to deliver his/her paper, and 10 minutes for critique and discussion.
Deadline: Refereed paper full manuscripts: 18 May 2012.
Non-refereed paper 250 word abstracts: 18 April 2012.
Symposium (Parallel Session)
Symposia provide a less-structured venue for examining problems or topics in comparative and international education from a variety of perspectives. Symposia may present alternative solutions, interpretations, or contrasting points of view on a specified problem or topic or in relation to a common theme. The focus in symposia
should be on discussion and interaction among presenters and audience members.
While the total number of presenters is not limited, we will allocate approximately 90 minutes divided as necessary among presenters for these sessions.

Deadline: Symposia proposal abstracts (500 words): 18 May 2012.
Panels (Parallel Session)
Panels are proposed by a single participant around a common subject or theme. Formal papers are presented, followed by discussion. Panels will be allotted approximately 90 minutes, which will be divided as necessary among presenters in the panel. The panel proposer will be responsible for introductions of the panel
members and the topic.

Deadline: Refereed paper panels (Full manuscripts of each paper to be presented): 18
May 2012.
Non-refereed paper panels (250 word abstract for each paper to be presented): 18
April 2012.
Country Reports (Parallel Session)
Country reports are opportunities for delegates to describe and discuss development, issues and problems in the education development in one particular country. Country reports should be proposed by a single participant, and list details of all proposed participants and the issues to be covered. Three country reports will be grouped within a single 90 minute session, allowing 30 minutes for each report.
Deadline: Country Report Proposal (250 words): 18 April 2012.
Posters
A poster allows a teacher, administrator or researcher to present on some topic related to one of the subthemes. Presenters produce a paper that shows the main features of their topic, and during the poster session the presenter is available to discuss the work with visitors to the poster session (tentatively scheduled during
coffee/lunch breaks). Poster dimensions will be detailed in the final announcement.
Deadline: Poster Proposal Abstract (250 words): 18 April 2012.
Please submit abstracts and manuscripts to the address below either by E-mail in electronic format using a recent version of Microsoft Word, fax, or air mail.
