On May 14, 2024, IICE Lecturer JING Xiaoli delivered a lecture titled "Qualitative Research Methodology in Social Sciences: Theory and Application". The lecture was hosted by Associate Professor HUANG Yu.


In her lecture, Lecturer JING began by discussing the differences between quantitative and qualitative research, introducing the philosophical foundations of social science research, namely ontology, epistemology, and methodology. On this basis, she provided a detailed explanation of the common paradigms in social science research. Lecturer JING then vividly described the process of qualitative research in social sciences, drawing from her own research experience. She also elaborated on the basic characteristics and appropriate applications of commonly used qualitative research methodologies through specific case studies. In conclusion, Lecturer JING looked ahead to the future development of qualitative research in the social sciences, emphasizing that research methods and theories are tools that serve research questions. As an important tool for advancing knowledge production, qualitative research should receive broader attention and application.


During the discussion session, Lecturer JING engaged in in-depth exchanges with the faculty and students attending the lecture on topics such as the relationship between speculative and empirical research, and the application of case study methods in comparative education research. She also offered specific advice to students on how to develop their own understanding of methodology and select research methods that suit their studies.
