Lecture (No.132) An Introduction to Meta-Analysis on Educational Interventions

On November 7, 2019, Professor Alan Cheung from the Chinese University of Hong Kong visited IICE and delivered a lecture entitledAn Introduction to Meta-Analysis on Educational Interventionsfor IICE’s International Education Podium. The lecture was chaired by IICE Professor LIU Baocun and attended by graduate students from the IICE.

 

Prof. Cheung began his lecture by giving a retrospect of the development trajectory of meta-analysis, sharing the advantages and disadvantages of traditional reviews as a research methodology. Then he elaborated upon a few key questions such as ‘what is meta-analysis’, ‘how to conduct meta-analysis’ and ‘the usual misbeliefs of meta-analysis’. Prof. Cheung pointed out that meta-analysis as a methodology was underpinned by a quantitative integration and analysis of the findings from all the empirical studies relevant to an issue, and thus findings from different studies can be expressed in terms of a common metric. Finally, Prof. Cheung discussed with the audience various issue pertaining to how to conduct meta-analysis, including data acquisition, data treatment and instruments needed.

 

Prof. Alan Cheung is currently the chair of Department of Educational Policy and Administration, Faculty of Education, the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is also serving as the head of Hong Kong University-School Partnership Center and the Adjunct Professor at Johns Hopkins University and Nanjing Normal University. In 2013 and 2018, he received the Research Excellence Award from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Discovery International Award from the Australian Research Council, respectively.
