Lecture (No.127) The Reform of Finnish Education: Learning for the Best

On October 18, 2019, Professor Fred Dervin from the Faculty of Education, Helsinki University, Finland delivered a lecture entitledThe Reform of Finnish Education: Learning for the Bestfor IICE’s International Education Podium. The lecture was chaired by IICE Associate Professor LIU Min and attended by faculty members and graduate students from the IICE.

 

Prof. Dervin began his lecture by briefing the national characteristics (geography, history, welfare policy, religions and population) and people’s traits of Finland and explaining why Finland was assessed the happiest country in the world by relevant international organizations. After that, he elaborated upon the country’s provision of basic education and analyzed the factors that promoted Finland’s outstanding performance in international assessments such as PISA. He pointed out that relevant national policies such as the implementation of problem-based learning policy was among such driving factors for quality progress. Finally, Prof. Dervin also analyzed the problems of Finnish education sector from a critical perspective, including the turnover of quality youth teacher and teacher overpressure.

 

Prof. Fred Dervin’s main research areas include comparative culture, cross-cultural education, multicultural sociology, and international student mobility. He is also a Visiting Professor at China’s Remin University.
