Publish Date:2019-06-01

On May 22, 2019, Professor Ulrich Teichler from University of Kassel, Germany delivered a lecture entitledInternationalization in Higher Education: Common Trends or Varied Solutionsfor IICE’s International Education Podium. The lecture was chaired by IICE Associate Professor LIU Min and attended by faculty members and graduate students from the IICE.

Prof. Teichler began his lecture with illustrating the three important concepts of ‘internationalization’, ‘globalization’ and ‘regionalization’. Then he elaborated upon the seven hot issues in the field of internationalization of higher education over the past few years, including the expectation and function of educational internationalization, the mode of internationalization and the change of values involved. Next, Prof. Teichler compared the various measures taken by different countries and regions in terms of internationalization of higher education since the 1990s, and identified the trends of internationalization as being driven by several important larger forces such as nationalism, the recovery of new imperialism, and an international elite tendency. Finally, in combination with his own experiences, Prof. Teichler discussed issues including world university rankings, the limits of the internationalization of higher education, cross-national joint degrees with IICE faculty and students.

Prof. Teichler is professor emeritus at the International Centre for Higher Education Research Kassel (INCHER), University of Kassel. He also served as the President of European Association for Higher Education Research (EAHER) and President of the European Association for institutional research (EAIR). Furthermore, he has been the chief editor for the renowned journal Higher Education for around 20 years, and has hosted a number of significant projects of international comparison.
