On November 1, 2022, IICE Professor TENG Jun delivered a lecture entitled "Western Interpretation of Global Competency and Chinese Thinking" for IICE’s International Education Podium. The lecture was chaired by IICE Professor LIU Baocun and was conducted in a combination of online and offline.
Professor TENG first reviewed the origin of the concept of "Global Competence" and its development in the field of education, and summarized two major trends--from cross-cultural issues to global issues, from the logic of module elements to subject-object relationship logic, and then to the current mainstream logic of action. Driven by relevant research, the United States made progress in policies and practices related to global competence, and also formed a unique set of practice promotion models. The development of global competence in the United States has further affected OECD, which has also carried out international evaluation and other related work in global competence in recent years.
On this basis, Professor TENG emphatically analyzed the connotation and practice of global competence in the Chinese context, and put forward a series of questions on the four aspects of "problem, environment, value and connotation": First, what problems should China solve when it proposes "Global Competence"? Second, what is the external environment for China to cultivate "Global Competence"? Third, what is China's cultural tradition and value orientation of "Global Competence"? Fourth, what is the content boundary of cultivating students' "Global Competence" in China? While raising this series of questions, Professor TENG cited extensively in Chinese and foreign cultural classics, combined with factual data, presented in detail and explained the thoughts generated during the research process. These views are very enlightening for the direction and exploration of further research.
Professor TENG's profound insight into "Global Competence" in the context of China triggered the resonance and reflection of all people. At the end of the lecture, she had further discussions with teachers and students.
