Publish Date:2023-10-17

On October 17, 2023, Dr. ZHANG Yang from the Graduate School of Education, Hokkaido University, Japan, delivered a lecture titled "How to Discuss Understandable Academic Subjects in a Different Cultural Context - Based on the Differences in Research Backgrounds and Academic Contexts between China and Japan". The lecture was chaired by IICE Professor LIU Baocun, and attended by some teachers and students.

Taking into account her own study and research history in Japan, Dr. ZHANG vividly talked about how to transform the problematic awareness captured in her overseas study experience into academic topics, and how to elaborate the unique concepts, thoughts and opinions in the national context into academic expressions that can be understood and recognised by foreign scholars. She suggested that when exporting our views to foreign countries, we should take into account the unique logical framework and discourse system of the target country, think about what issues the other country "doesn't understand", accept the other country's "not understanding", and be able to explain why the other country "doesn't understand". At the same time, the researcher should be able to explain why the other side does not understand, which requires the researcher to have a deep enough understanding of the education situation in his/her own country.

At the end of the lecture, Dr. ZHANG answered the questions from students and teachers, and IICE Professor LIU Baocun concluded the lecture with the words "Self-mindfulness, other-mindfulness and other-mindfulness" proposed by Tao Xingzhi.
