Lecture (N0.103): Transition of Higher Education in East Asia and Europe

 On April 12, 2017, Professor Ulrich Teichler from the International Centre for Higher Education Research, University of Kassel, Germany delivered a lecture entitled “Transition of Higher Education in East Asia and Europe” for IICE’s International Education Podium. The lecture was attended by faculty and graduate students from the IICE.

 
The lecture began by Professor Teichler provoking the audiences to think “what should we compare?” when it comes to eastern and western higher education. Following this, he introduced the higher education systems under the larger social circumstances of different eastern and western nations along with elaborating upon the impact on Europe brought by East Asian nations’ economic success. Then Prof. Teichler compared the commonality and differences between higher education in eastern and western nations from the perspectives of educational ideas, the influence of state authorities on education, educational patterns of first-class universities, higher education internationalization, professionalism of university professors, and so on. Lastly, Prof. Teichler engaged in an exchange with the audience about issues of higher educational systems, educational patterns, and academic status of professionals in different nations’ universities.
