On Oct. 18, 2015, Professor Oleg Gubin from Moscow University, Russia; Professor Karanam Pushpanadham from the M.S. University, Baroda, India; Professor Charl Wolhuter from North-West University, South Africa; and IICE Assistant Professor Lorin Yochim participated in a panel on “How to Be a Good Teacher” for the IICE’s International Education Podium. The panel was chaired by IICE Professor LIU Baocun and attended by students and teachers from Beijing Normal University and outside.
Professor LIU asked the panelists the following questions about their country contexts:
· What is the social status of primary and secondary teachers?
· What qualifications are required to be a teacher?
· What makes a good teacher in your country?
· What role do primary and secondary teachers play?
· What is their workload like?
· What is a typical day like in a school?
· What are teaching methods like?
· Have their been any recent changes and/or reforms?
· How do teachers help students with low academic performance?
· How do teachers manage class?
· How do teachers handle problem students?
· Does school bullying occur? If it does, how do teachers deal with it?
· How do teachers and parents cooperate?
The experts discussed these questions as a group.
At the end of the panel, the four experts had exchanges with students and teachers on issues such as teaching, class management, and professionalism of primary and secondary teachers.
