Publish Date:2015-03-26
On April 23, 2015, Dr. Binod Khadria, Professor in School of Social Sciences at Jawaharlal Nehru University (New Delhi, India), delivered the above-titled lecture for the IICE’s International Education Podium. The lecture was chaired by IICE Associate Professor LIU Qiang and attended by IICE international and Chinese Master’s students.

Binod Khadria is Chairperson of the Zakir Husain Centre for Educational Studies within the School of Social Sciences at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. His research interests include Education and Economics. He is also Director of the International Migration and Diaspora Studies (IMDS) Project, Deputy Chair (East Asia) and Regional Coordinator (India) at Asia Pacific Migration Research Network (APMRN), and he sits on the Boards of International Network on Migration and Development (INMD), Zacatecas (Mexico).

In this lecture, Professor Khadria discussed the concepts of internal efficiency of education (how the education system develops qualified graduates) and external efficiency (how graduates make their way to the labor market). Focusing on the latter, he discussed the influence of the flow of Indian graduates on domestic and international labor markets. He discussed India’s education system and issues that the country’s domestic labor market is confronting, such as wasted talent arising from the fact that graduates can’t find jobs matching with their majors, imbalanced demand of specialties in different regions of the country, and a mismatch between graduates and the requirements of job vacancies. He also discussed the experience of Indian emigrants in various country contexts.

       Professor Khadria concluded by
expressing his sincere hope that exchange and cooperation between Chinese and Indian teachers and students be conducted.
