International Education Symposium (NO.50): Multiculturalism Policy and Research in Canada

        On the afternoon of November 6, 2013, Prof. John Berry, former chairman of the International Cross-Cultural Psychology Association, tenured emeritus professor of the Psychology Department, Queen’s University, Canada, brought to IICE his lecture titled “Multiculturalism Policy and Research In Canada” in Room 723, Yingdong Building, Beijing Normal University. The presentation was moderated by Dr. Liu Qiang and attended by teachers and students of IICE as well as students from other departments.
The main research directions of Professor John Berry are basic theory and research methods of cross-cultural psychology, cross-cultural contact and psychology and adjustment of race relations etc. Professor John Berry believes that with the increase of cross-cultural activities there are more and more cross-cultural communications in society. What’s more, every community shares the characteristic of multi-culture. From the perspective of cross-cultural psychology, all human behaviors are processes of adaptation to the new arising cultural background. Then Professor John Berry introduced the framework of cross-cultural communication from the perspective of culture and psychology.
         In the end, Professor John Berry made a thorough discussion and view exchanges with teachers and students on the issue that how China deals with the relationship between immigration culture and native culture as well as some other multi-cultures. Finally, on behalf of all the teachers and students of IICE, Professor Sun Jin gave gift to Professor John Berry. The lecture was crowned with complete success.
