International Education Symposium (No.39): World Bank and the Indonesian Education Reform

       Mdm. Mae Chu Chang, Chief Education Officer, World Bank – East Asia and Pacific, Director, Department of Human Development, World Bank Indonesia Office, visited IICE and as part of the 38th International Education Symposium presented the topic “World Bank and the Indonesian Education Reform.” The presentation was hosted by Dr. WANG Libing, UNESCO-Bangkok Office. Representatives for the Indonesian government, World Bank China Office Senior Education Specialist, Dr. XIAO Liping, IICE Director Prof. LIU Baocun and many students from the Master’s and Doctoral programs were all present.
       During the lecture, Mdm. Chang briefly introduced the history, mission, and organization of the World Bank, and elaborated on the development measures carried out by the World Bank in Indonesia. She also used data to describe the latest developments in Indonesia. Mdm. Chang focused her presentation describing the strategies that World Bank provided for Indonesian development, and the reforms leading to the improvement of teacher development, such as the implementation of “Teacher’s Law,” which legislates that teachers must obtain a four year university degree. Through analyzing data and current news, Mdm. Chang pointed out that the World Bank is no longer involved in Indonesian Education monetarily, but also providing technology and information support, and fostering partnerships.
       Lastly, a Q&A was held and many students had the chance to join in the discussion regarding World Bank’s mission and the specific details of video study.
