Prof. Robert Rhoads from UCLA, Prof. ZHA Qiang from the University of York (Canada), Prof. Xiaoyang Wang of Tsinghua University, and Prof. LIU Lili of Party School of CPCC Central Committee jointly presented the 38th International Education Symposium lecture – “Marketization of Research Universities in China, Canada and the U.S: Problems and Opportunities.” The symposium was moderated by Prof. LIU Baocun, and many attendees are IICE PhD and Master’s students.
Market strength is one of the influential factors in university development. These expert professors discussed and analyzed the process, current stance, problems and opportunities from the marketization of research universities in the US, Canada, and China. Due to differences in historical and management philosophy, the degree of marketization of research universities in each country varies and different problems are present. Speaking from the development history of research university, although market influence in higher education is inevitable, it is extremely worrisome to hand university development entirely to market economy. Instead of becoming wholly market-driven, and to become self-benefiting, universities must have the strength to counter market influence.
Last but not least, the audience joined in a discussion about research universities and marketization. The lively and enriching symposium has been very beneficial for the students.
